What Is Remotion, and Why Use It for Short-Form Video?

Remotion is a framework for making videos with React code. Each frame is a rendered component, so layouts, timing and animation are written as code and exported to MP4. It suits repeatable, template-driven and AI-generated video, and it is less suited to cutting real footage by hand.

How it works

In Remotion, a video is a React component that receives the current frame number. Animation is just math on that number, and rendering opens each frame in a headless browser, captures it and encodes the result.

Where it’s strong

  • Repeatable style. Change one brand file and every video follows.
  • Exact sync. Tie an animation to the frame a word is spoken.
  • AI agents. Scenes are text files, so an agent can write and fix them.
  • Data and UI. Charts, mock apps and terminals stay crisp at any size.

Where an editor is better

If your reel is mostly filmed footage cut by feel, a normal editor is faster. Remotion can use video clips, but it shines when the frame is built, not filmed.

Licensing

Remotion isn’t under a standard open-source licence. It’s free for individuals and small teams, and companies with four or more people need a company licence. Check the current licence before commercial use.

What it doesn’t give you

Remotion is the engine, not the look. Motion rules, components, voice, captions and review all sit on top. That layer is what Abu Reel Kit provides.
